Changing Care Providers Mid-Pregnancy: How to Navigate the Switch
Oftentimes pregnant women change their care providers mid-pregnancy for several reasons or to explore other options. Below are some things to keep in mind when changing your care provider.
Requesting Your Medical Records
You are entitled to a copy of your medical records. Offices typically provide a copy to patients for personal reasons and insurance claims. Having these records will be helpful for when and if you do switch.
How to Navigate the Switch with Your Current Provider
It is not uncommon for patients to switch, and therefore, providers are used to this process.
You can request your records and cancel your appointments through a patient portal, if applicable. You can also call the office or have your new provider request the information. It is okay to tell your current provider you are switching if you are comfortable doing so; this may be helpful to them to improve their patient experiences.
When is the Best Time to Switch Providers?
You can change care providers at any point during your pregnancy. The sooner you switch to a new care provider, the better. Most practices will accept new patients that are in their second or third trimester.
Is it Necessary to Repeat Any Exams?
Unless serious medical concerns arise, your new physician should not need to perform any tests or exams that you already had done. When making the switch, ask your previous care provider to include any notes from the visits.
Changing care providers mid-pregnancy is a common practice for many women and it is okay if you decide that is the best option for you.
